Where the bark of a tree changes for a branch to grow is called the collar. The proper way to cut a branch off is to cut just outside the collar. That cut is known as a collared cut. When a branch is cut off, the collar then grows over the open wound and seals it up to keep the rest of the tree safe from insects and disease.
